Meredith wore a dress to dinner, which she hadn’t worn in years. She remembered Victor liked it. In fact, she might have been wearing it the last time they’d made love. Would he remember? She had no illusions. Even the most romantically inclined man wouldn’t remember such a thing years after the fact. Perhaps he would’ve when they were first married, but not now.

Victor came into the dining room and barely looked at her. He sat down, tucked his napkin onto his lap and took a long gulp of red wine. The serving staff served fresh bread and a salad. He pecked at the salad, spread butter on the bread and tore large chunks that flaked onto his plate.

She watched him closely. Sal, his oldest and most dear friend, had walked out of their lives, but he appeared unfazed. She thought about the arson, but tried not to let it cloud her mind. She wanted to focus on the positive in him. It must still exist somewhere in the depths of his soul.

“How was your day, dear?” she asked.

He glanced up and gave her a wan smile. “Fine, dear. You?”

“Awful, really.”

He looked genuinely surprised. “Awful? What happened? Did you get kicked out of the Bridge Club?”

She felt his biting words like physical sword cuts, but bore up and did her best to ignore the gibes. “Well, you must know that Sal left. Surely you know that?”

His eyes hardened. “Oh yes. You heard then. I think he’ll cool off and realize he’s made a huge mistake. He’ll be back.”

“I don’t think so. He packed his things and drove off in a cab. I saw him off. The entire staff did. He’s not coming back, dear.”

He stroked his mustache, then took another sip of wine. “Hmm. It’s unfortunate, but perhaps it was time for him to move on.”

“That’s it? That’s all you have to say about your childhood friend leaving? He’s like family.”

He shook his head slowly. “No. He’s not family. Family wouldn’t leave.”

“Abigail left.”

“She’ll be back. He will, too. And when he does, I’ll make him beg for his job back.”

Meredith closed her eyes. This would be harder than she imagined. How could she seduce a man with such a vile character?

“Do you remember this dress, Victor?”

He glanced up from his bread and squinted at her. “Um, no. should I? It looks a bit dated to tell you the truth.”

She stood and walked to his side. He watched her as though wondering how the animals had gotten past the bars at the zoo. She swayed her hips and leaned over so he’d get a good look at her cleavage. It used to drive him crazy with lust.

“What are you doing?”

“Let’s sleep in the same bed tonight, Victor. Like we used to. You don’t show it, but I know you’re upset about Sal leaving. I’ve known you too long. We’re both sad, let’s console one another. It’s been far too long.” She leaned on the table, seductively twirling a ringlet of hair.

“What’s gotten into you? Have you been drinking all day? You sound like a harlot.
